Question:
Why does my display show "PAPER LOW - 0.0 HOURS REMAINING" even though I properly changed the chart paper?

 



 

Answer: There are two main reasons why the above display will appear.

1) The obvious reason would be that the chart paper is indeed low or that the software has not been properly set to the length of paper installed.

2) There is a problem in the print carriage feedback assembly.

If you look closely at the left side belt pulley, you should see a plastic arm that is part of the feedback assembly (See figure 1). Upon initial power-up, the print carriage travels to the left side and comes in contact with this plastic armature. This armature activates the opto-sensor assembly (See figure 2) by breaking the infrared beam and sends the information to the procesor board via the grey ribbon cable that is seen traveling along the top of the unit. This is how the processor knows exactly where the print carriage is located. If the Processor does not receive this signal, then it will default to the display shown above.

Solution: There are three main causes to this problem

1) POOR CONNECTIONS: Check for a good connection at the processor board. This is the only practical "field repair" involving this issue. The red connector at the end of the Opto Feedback (See below) has been known to come loose under heavy vibration conditions.



 

2) PHYSICAL DAMAGE: The plastic Armature (Figure 3) has been damaged and is no longer able to activate the sensor. We do see these damaged from time to time and we are not sure exactly how it happens!

3) COMPONENT FAILURE: The Opto Sensor (Figure 2) and/or Processor board has failed and is no longer able to receive the signal. Usually the Opto sensor fails more frequently than the processor board.

The Armature and Opto Sensor Assembly are not currently available for sale. However, we may have some used/rebuilt items available if you are willing to try to repair this issue yourself. If not, the unit will likely need to be sent out for repair.
